My work generally focuses on design, technique and materials. I begin most of my pieces with design as my primary content. If there is an abstract idea to be associated with my design, I allude to it in the piece’s title.
My primary design influences are science fiction, industrial aesthetic and technology. Science fiction has always fueled my imagination with the sense of wonder and limitless potential it presents. Likewise, mechanical objects have always been of fascination to me as they appeal to my tinkering, perfectionist nature. That same nature also contributes to my interest in new technologies and materials. These influences prompt me to explore ways I can incorporate new ideas, materials and processes into my artwork.
I am an avid cyclist, kayaker and car enthusiast and being such, I often come into contact with “high-tech” materials and processes such as carbon fiber and CAD/CAM. I have taught myself how to mold carbon fiber forms that become part of my artwork. It is a beautiful material with properties that make it ideal for metalwork and jewelry designs. In college, I learned how to use the personal computer as a tool for working in art by using simple vector drawing programs to create templates for cutting out metal. Later, I learned how to use 3D computer modeling to create virtual models of pieces that afterward can be made tangible. 3D computer modeling has become a very useful tool for me in that it allows me to quickly create models and manipulate them into final forms. With those models I can then output the data into CNC milling or rapid prototyping processes to yield quick, precise results.
