I started painting after the unexpected loss of my father in 1998 as a means of coping from the incredible shock and stress associated with his death. To help myself heal, I used the small amount of money I had to buy paintbrushes, canvas, oils and acrylics, and through the brushstrokes I was able to release pain and focus on moving forward. To this day my art is a form of healing and positive reinforcement for me the artist as well as a visual escape for the client or collector.
I first studied art professionally at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy in 2001. In 2003, I studied under Robert Venosa in Cadaques, Spain (the former home of Salvador Dali). I spent the summer of 2004 working with Master Painter Philip Rubinov-Jacobson in the Austrian Alps. In 2005, I studied mono-printmaking in Skopelos Island, Greece. Other travels, that inspired unique travel bodies of my artwork include journeys to Cape Town, South Africa, Tokyo, Japan and Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am a self-taught artist who learns by constant experimentation and the privilege of working alongside other established artists. A recent hallmark of my career is the collaborative pieces I’ve created with Houston mosaic artist Chris Silkwood and famed Texan sculptor David Adickes.
My art is free form, full of energy, life and movement. My preferred medium is a mix including oils, pastels, graphite and oil sticks. I paint with many vibrant hues and enjoy experimenting with bold colors. My style is known as Escapism, an ever-evolving combination of movement, texture and color.Rather than name individual pieces of art, I generally create a series of work inspired by my current life situation and environment, while being under the umbrella of Escapism; including Carnivale, Athens, Oxford and Landscape. All unique, common elements filter through all, such as paper texturing, multi-layers and focal point attractions such as checkerboard blocks or overlapping circles.
I have self-published three books: Deliverance and More than Words, Escapism and Seven. My fourth book, The Art of Meaningful Living, a collaborative effort with author and Houston psychotherapist Christopher Brown, will be released in 2009.
